¬For the past year or so, my brothers and I have kept a list of funny phrases our father will say. They are not extraordinary phrases when he says them, but when we write them down (out of context) they become bold statements; often hilarious and outrageous.
“You’re Still Champ” is one of those phrases.
This EP is made up of instrumental elements from our forthcoming album “The Swooshy Businessman”. In the context of the songs that they are from, these elements might get buried or brushed over. But when presented on their own, they become romanticized versions of themselves; sounding more grand and important than they actually are. There is also the possibility for them to sound superfluous and not worth being presented outside the context of their song. This idea of perception of memory is also central to the songs of “The Swooshy Businessman”.
The purpose of putting out this music before the source material is available is so you have no context. It puts you in the place of someone reading that list of my father’s quotes and trying to imagine what prompted him to say those things. Sometimes it was as simple as something he was watching on TV, and other times it was a moment of sincerity or struggle.
